Management

  Visitor Information

Location: The Kameng Elephant Reserve has been created for the scientific management of the large Asiatic Elephant population in the foothills of the western part of Arunachal Pradesh and came into existence on 19th June 2002 vide Government notification No. CWL/D/7/2001/2868-2943 Dtd 19th June 2002 covering an area of 1892 Sq.Km. This Reserve comprise of the following parts of wildlife Sanctuaries and Reserve forests: - 1. Pakke Wildlife Sanctuary (586 Sq. Km.), 2. Eagle Nest Wildlife Sanctuary (126 Sq. Km.), 3. Sessa Orchid Sanctuary (36 Sq. Km.) and Reserved Forests under Khellong Forest Division (1144 Sq. Km.).

It extends from Papum River in the East to the common boundary between Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan in the west. In the south it touches the common boundary of Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary and Nameri National Park of Assam. Tenga Reserved Forest and Seppa Unclassed State Forests lie to the North of the Reserve.

Approach: - Seijosa the Headquarters of Pakke Elephant Reserve is located 60 kms away from Tezpur in Assam which is connected biweekly with Kolkata by Indian Airlines flights. Tezpur is 3 hours drive from Guwahati which has regular flight connection with New Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai aand also have connection by trains with all the Metros of tjhe country.

Forest Type: - Tropical Semi-evergreen with abundance of Shorea assamica (Mekai), Shorea robusta (Sal), Termenelia myriocarpa (Hollock), Artocarpus chaplasa (Sam), Cinnamomum cecicodaphnea (Gonsorai), Amora wallichii (Amari), Canarium strictum (Dhuna), Termenelia citrina (Hilika), Dysoylum procetum (Poma), Duabanga grandiflora (Khokan), Mesua ferrea (Nahar), Castopnensis indica (Hingori), Enderpermum chinnensis (Phul gamari), Syzgium cummuni (Jamuk), Saplum baccatum (Sellang), Baccaurea sapida (Morhal), Vatica lanceofolia (Moroli), Mortus roxburghii, Starculia hamiltonii, Psedostachyum polymorphum (Baja bamboo), Dendrocalamus hamiltonii (Kako Bamboo), Bamboo safulda (Hill jati).

Major Fauna: - Indian Elephant, Tiger, Leopard, Clouded leopard, Red Panda, Musk deer, Sambhar, Hog deer, Himalayan Black bear, Wild dog, Fishing cat, Jungle cat, Slow lorries, Indian bison, Fox, Jackal, Malayan Giant squirrel, Civet cat, Hare, Yellow thoarted martin, Rhesus Macaque, Capped langur etc. 250 varities of Butterflies and 300 species of birds have been recorded including 4 species of hornbills.

Elephant population as per 2001 census: - 377 Nos.
